One of the most famous beagles is Snoopy from the animated series The Peanuts. "To snoop" means "sniff" in German and is exactly what the dog breed prefers to do.
The Beagle has an excellent nose that makes it an ideal tracking dog. The Department of Agriculture and the border protection authorities in the USA use him as part of the so-called Beagle Brigades to track down illegally smuggled substances at the borders, airports, and ports.
Where does the name Beagle come from?
The exact origin of the name has not yet been clarified. There are a few theories though:
The word "Beagle" could come from the French "begueule", which translates as "open throat", "mouth"/"loudmouth".
The word 'beagle' could also be derived from 'beag', an old English/French/Welsh word for 'small'.
The Old German word “begele” also comes into question. It means "to scold"/"scold" because the Beagle has been known to bark loudly if not properly trained.
