The basset loves long, leisurely walks with plenty of opportunity to sniff around. Due to his physical condition, he is not suitable as a sports companion dog.
If you expect total submission and unconditional obedience, you should stay away from a basset hound. He’s too smart and stubborn to be made into a puppet.
You can forget drill, but polite requests and high-calorie arguments are gladly accepted.
#1 Even if your Basset Hound is strong and incredibly agile for such short legs, it’s better to discourage him from jumping out of a car, for example. Pick him up and support his back so he doesn’t hurt himself.
#2 Basset Hound puppies can suffer from joint problems as they grow up.
Make sure your puppy doesn't overexert himself while playing and discourage him from jumping on and off furniture.
#3 Basset hounds are poor swimmers with two-thirds of their body weight on the front.
Do not allow your Basset Hound to jump into the pool as he can quickly get into trouble there.
