English Bulldog: Temperament, Size, Life Expectancy

English Bulldog: Gentle & Strong at the Same Time

The English Bulldog is a very old breed of dog. It is a mix of the English Mastiffs of the time and heavy Asian dogs. At that time, the animals were much stronger and bulkier than today.

When several of these mongrel dogs separated fighting bulls, the name was clear. The dogs practically worked out their names themselves. The dogs were then bred to bite bulls and fight badgers, bears, and lions. These cruel games were not banned until the beginning of the 19th century. Since then, the breeders of this dog breed have placed less value on the aggressiveness and fighting spirit of the dogs.

The head of the brawny Mastiff is large and the upper lips hangover. The heavy animals have a slightly waddling gait due to their leg position.

How Big & How Heavy Will It Be?

The animals can reach a size of 40 cm. At 25 kg, they are quite heavy for their size.

Coat, Colors & Care

The Bulldog coat is soft, short, and dense. The coat, therefore, does not have to be particularly cared for. A brief brushing over during the change of coat is sufficient.

The coat colors are brown and reddish-brown with white.

Nature, Temperament

In their nature, these dogs are rather gentle, friendly, and extremely lovable.

They prove to be reliable, patient, affectionate, and very alert. A comfortable dog for comfortable people.

Do Bulldogs get along well with children? Yes, they are very fond of children and like to play the family dog.

However, they are often problematic in their behavior towards other animals. Basically, an English bulldog is more suitable as a single dog, but this can also be completely different for individual dogs since every bulldog has its own unique character.

Upbringing

Contrary to popular belief, bulldogs can be trained quite well, if only because they are very comfortable animals.

In the pure command form, however, it does not always work the same way, you need a lot of patience. It’s easier to get ahead with a Bulldog if you use ingenuity and tasty rewards instead of strictness.

Either playful or meaningful exercises are helpful since pure practice is quickly seen through just for the sake of practice and the dog may then no longer participate, especially if there is nothing to eat for it.

Posture & Outlet

Because of their size, they can be kept indoors.

English Bulldogs don’t need a lot of exercise.

Breed Diseases

Many animals have short noses and breathing problems due to their build. In recent years, more attention has been paid to the health of dogs when breeding dogs, so it is particularly important to choose a reputable breeder.

Life Expectancy – Age

These dogs only live an average of 8 to 10 years.

Note :

The term Bulldog is actually the generic term for the different breeds, two of which have been recognized by the FCI:

The English Bulldog and the French Bulldog. There are also a few other breeds that are not officially recognized, such as American Bulldogs and Australian Bulldogs, among others

Colloquially, however, the English breed is usually meant when the Bulldog is mentioned.
