That’s Why Cats Like to Be High Up

Every cat owner knows that: You come home and look for your kitty for what feels like an eternity. When you almost want to give up, you discover your furry friend at the top of the bookcase. But why do cats like such high places?

Because of the View

One of the reasons cats like to choose high spots in the home is the view. However, this does not mean the picturesque view of the sofa, but an overview of everything that is happening in the room.

Cats lie down on refrigerators, shelves, and scratching posts in order to have everything in view and to be able to recognize possible attackers at an early stage. The place at lofty heights gives the cat a feeling of security.

Because of the Hierarchy

If there are several cats in the household, the height at which your cats are lying can also say something about their positions: Whoever is highest, has the say, everyone below must obey. However, this ranking between cats can change several times a day.

Just watch which of your fur noses is highest in the morning, at noon, and in the evening. This is particularly easy to observe in the case of scratching posts with several floors. As a rule, cats do not fight for the highest places; they take turns voluntarily to keep the peace in the household.

Because They Can

The last reason is pretty obvious: cats like to lie on top of furnishings in the home because they can easily do it. We, humans, need aids such as stairs, elevators, or ladders for pretty much every vertical movement.

Cats, on the other hand, can move much more freely in vertical space. They are faster, more agile, and have claws to pull themselves up. Show-off knowledge: Most fur noses can jump six times their body length.

If you could, you would be relaxing on the top of the closet, wouldn’t you?
