Your Dog Can Get Hay Fever Too – Here’s How You Can Help

Many two-legged ones are afraid of the very first bushes. Then the time begins for swollen eyelids, itching in the eyes, and a runny nose. What many don’t know: Dogs also have hay fever.

About one in 10 dogs suffers from hay fever and pollen allergies, according to Tina Hölscher, a veterinarian with the animal welfare organization. There is a wide range of symptoms. One only had a slight reddening of the conjunctiva, the other had bad eyes and nasal discharge, and severe itching.

“If the symptoms are mild, there is no need for therapy,” says the veterinarian. On the other hand, badly affected animals need help. “Reducing the amount of the allergenic substance always brings relief,” explains Hölscher.

Hay Fever? This is How You Help Your Dog

Next, you should rinse the area around your dog’s eyes with a clean, damp washcloth and clean water. In this context, it is not recommended to use chamomile tea or a similar product as it has a disinfectant effect but also irritates the mucous membranes.

Dogs with long hair are allowed to be washed all over the body. This removes pollen trapped in the hair. However, when taking a bath or shower outside, make sure it’s not too cold.

If you don’t rinse off the pollen, the allergens in the fur will get into the apartment and the basket, and your dog will be harmed not only on the outside but also on the inside of the four walls.

Special Shampoos for Allergies Help

For allergy sufferers, special pet shampoos can be used while bathing. Grooming your dog can help the action. However, in extremely severe cases of hay fever, you should take your dog to a veterinarian. Because sometimes the only thing that helps is the use of eye ointments, pills to eradicate or relieve symptoms.
