The actual roots of the Rottweiler date back to Roman times. However, Germany is considered the country of origin of this dog breed as we know it today. This dog breed originated in the Rottweil area with the name “Rottweiler Metzgerhund” at the time.
Suitability
At that time, these dogs were mainly used as drivers and herding dogs. From 1910 they were also used as police dogs. Today they are used as working dogs, guard dogs, and also as loyal and watchful companion dogs.

The Rottweiler can reach a height of almost 70 cm. Its weight is between 40 and 60 kg.
Coat, Colors & Care
The coat is tight, short, and close-fitting to the body. No special grooming is necessary. Occasional overbrushing is sufficient. The typical basic color is black with brown markings (brand).
Nature, Temperament
The Rottweiler is considered to be particularly intelligent, willing to learn, resilient, self-confident, and courageous. It is loyal to his family and shows pronounced protective behavior. Often he tends to become particularly attached to one person.
Its relationship with children is very good, he is very fond of children. It is not so well suited as a guard dog, because he does not like being alone, and secondly, his threshold is quite high and he only barks briefly.
Upbringing
Especially with such a heavy, strong, and muscular breed of dog, it’s important that the dog listens to you when you want to let him run free. Depending on the federal state, the Rottweiler is a list dog and has to pass a character test in order to be exempted from the muzzle or leash requirement.
Even as a puppy you should socialize the Rottweiler well, ie he should experience as many people, other dogs, and places as possible without stress.
Education must be fair, loving, and consistent. Don’t make exceptions. The dog cannot understand this.
If necessary, work must be done on his protective instinct.
The good characteristics of this dog breed and its enthusiasm for work mean that it is quite easy to train.
Posture & Outlet
A large house with a garden plot is ideal for keeping a Rottweiler. He feels more comfortable here than in an apartment. The large and robust dogs need exercise every day with lots of exercises and also meaningful employment.

On average, Rottweiler dogs reach an age of 8 to 10 years.
