It owes its name to the Entlebuch, a valley in the cantons of Lucerne and Bern, from which it is said to originally come. The Entlebucher once served as a drover and guard dog. The first description of this breed dates back to 1889. However, the first standard was only established in 1927. A year earlier, the Swiss Club for Entlebuch Mountain Dogs had been founded, which took on the pure breeding and promotion of the breed.
