How To Close Security Loopholes For Cats

You can’t foresee every accident, but you know the little Pappenheimers: They like to jump and climb, are curious, and slip in anywhere a cat can fit.

The most important sources of danger for cats are, therefore: road traffic, unsecured balconies, and windows, washing machines, dishwashers, stovetops, open fireplaces and stoves, poisonous indoor plants, chemicals lying around, cigarettes, alcohol, open fire, sharp objects, and small parts that can be swallowed.

Keep Drawers Closed For Cats

Open doors and drawers only say one thing to a cat: Come in, bring in the mess! They don’t talk about dangers. Cupboards, boxes, and drawers with dangerous contents should therefore be closed again immediately after use. In addition to cigarettes, chemicals, cleaning supplies, medicine, sewing utensils, and fertilizer, also think of desk odds and ends (pins, scissors, cutter knives, paper clips, string). Sometimes only one thing helps: to declare rooms completely taboo for Mieze.

Poisonous Plants For Cats

“Is this plant poisonous?” If you don’t know, you can see our list of poisonous plants. Don’t forget in spring: Tulips, daffodils, and begonias are also no food for cats.

Poisoning can cause the following symptoms: vomiting, diarrhea, colic, impaired movement, spasms, cardiac arrhythmia, low blood pressure, slow heartbeat, tremor, salivation, paralysis, agitation, difficulty swallowing, and dilation of the eye pupils.

Cat Nets – That’s What Matters

Nets for windows, doors, balconies, or electric fences are available in several colors, in different mesh sizes from 20 to 50 millimeters, are UV-resistant, and have different tear and bite resistances. What is correct now? Choose a strong net if the area you want to cover is large, if you have a lot of cats, a cat likes to nibble, or if you have a climbing artist. On the balcony, a grey, white or transparent net is often less conspicuous than a green one. In the garden, on the other hand, green and brown are popular. If kittens are also to be protected by the net, use the smallest mesh size. Clear nylon nets are more likely to be approved by landlords than colored ones, but are the least strong, are not UV resistant, and are also easily chewed through by snack artists. Impenetrable and very stable, but expensive are stainless steel nets made of so-called V2A wire.

Cat Nets On Windows And Doors

A protective grille can be inserted from the front into windows, terraces, or balcony doors. You can easily build this yourself with the help of strips and rabbit wire. The specialist trade also offers a frame in white and brown covered with a net, which can be adjusted from 80 to 120 centimeters in width (door) and in height up to 220 centimeters. The window mesh frame is adjustable in size from 80 x 100 to 140 x 155 centimeters and can either be inserted into the window frame or attached to the outside of the window frame or wall with hooks. Instead of a net, windows can also be secured with insect gauze. This material is significantly stronger than traditional insect gauze. Alternatively, specialist retailers offer spring roller blinds with insect screens. On the side: Windows and doors that you want to tilt get either a net or a grid on the side corners and on top to protect the cats.

Cats Safe On The Balcony And Terrace

By installing telescopic poles, you can even secure balconies with a net that is open at the top and sides. These bars are stable and height-adjustable. In most cases, the assembly utensils are included in the delivery. Be sure to ask about it when ordering! The brackets should be made of stainless steel or aluminum or at least galvanized and therefore rustproof. The attachment of a balcony net is also possible with angled rods that have to be dowelled. Another option is a mesh made of stainless steel wire (V2A). Although this wire is expensive, it is indestructible (also against cat teeth).

Garden Fences: Height Doesn’t Matter For Cats

Garden fences of normal height can also be designed to be escape-proof, either with an electric fence placed in front of an electric net (fence) or with a thin, loosely waving net falling down from above, which the claws cannot hold.

And so that adventurous velvet paws don’t dig under the fence, the net is lowered deeper into the ground. To do this, cut open the lawn with an old bread knife and press the net about 15 cm deep into the ground. Until the roots of the lawn hold the net firmly in the ground, you have to attach it to the ground with tent pegs. Another permanent and stable solution for rooting cats is stone slabs that are placed vertically in the ground and connected to the wire mesh with screws and wire.
