Ear Care For Cats: This Is How It Works

Do you have to worry about ear care for your cats? If yes, what should you pay attention to? We have the answers!

Do you need to do ear care on cats?

Important: It is NOT necessary to clean the ears of healthy cats, as they clean themselves.

General cleaning or care of the ears is z. T. necessary for older and sick cats or after successful treatment against ear mites.

If you discover a dark film of grease in the ear canal, you should consult a veterinarian to clarify whether it is ear mites. These ear mites must be killed with special products, which you can of course obtain from your veterinarian.

Some breeds or even mixed breeds can be prone to excessive fat build-up. The excessive build-up of lard can putrefy and cause inflammation in the ear, the so-called “ear constriction”. If you own such a cat, regular cleaning is essential. However, you should always seek advice from a veterinarian and have the animal examined by him.

Use ear cleaners correctly

You can buy special tinctures with which you can clean your cat’s ears in every pet shop, specialist shop, or even at the veterinarian’s. Again, only do this if your vet has advised you to do so!

These tinctures are instilled into the ear and must be massaged well. Make sure your cat doesn’t shake his head. If this should happen, you will have to repeat the procedure again.

After a short exposure time, use a cotton cloth or a normal handkerchief. Wrap this around your finger and use it to clean your ear very carefully.

A special tip: Especially in winter, you should warm up the tincture briefly so that the cat is not startled.

The tinctures are mostly alcohol, so be sure to wear glasses. If your cat does shake and you don’t have glasses on, it could sting his eyes.

Clean cat ears without a tincture

Of course, cleaning or care is also possible without tincture. You can also clean your cat’s ears with a dry cloth as described above. Some moisture on the cloth is of course allowed, but it should not be completely wet.

Cats are very startled when they hear water getting into their ears. Under the worst circumstances, the wetness could also cause a middle ear infection.

What is not allowed when caring for ears in cats?

You should never clean the auditory canal with pointed objects! You should also make sure that you do not penetrate too far into the ear canal. Never use force and certainly not violence!

Ear sticks or paper handkerchiefs rolled up to a point could cause injuries in the ear and only push the wax deeper into the ear canal. Special care should be taken with the ears. Please always proceed very carefully so that you do not injure your little four-legged friend.
