Basset Hound – Good-Natured Family Dog

Exactly when the Basset Hound was first bred is debatable, but its origins are undoubtedly linked to the old hunting dog breeds of France.

At the end of the 19th century, the Basset Hound appeared in England and became a popular dog for hunting in packs – for example, for hunting hares. Basically, the Basset Hound is not a particularly fast scent hound, but due to its superior sense of smell and strong build, it has been a valuable pack hunting hound for decades.

General

  • FCI Group 6: Beagles, scenthounds, and related breeds.
  • Section 1: Hounds / 1.3 Little Hounds
  • Size: 33 by 38 centimeters
  • Colours: Black/White/Brown (three colors) or Lemon/White (two colors), other colors available.

Activity

Although these dogs seem lethargic these days (because breeding has changed their appearance so much) and they certainly wouldn’t win a race against a Greyhound, long daily walks with a Basset Hound are important. So don’t be fooled by looks. Here, too, it is important to make long circles around the field so that the Basset Hound gets enough exercise.

Features of the Breed

Due to its origin, the hunting instinct in some representatives of the breed may be stronger. So be careful while walking so that the hunter does not break through and chase the hare for kilometers. Otherwise, the Basset is a very calm, friendly, child-loving, and affectionate dog, which is therefore also well suited for families.

But the Basset Hound is by no means – although its appearance may indicate it – “really stupid”, as they say. On the contrary: four-legged friends are extremely smart. This is manifested, among other things, in the often observed obstinacy, against which owners have to assert themselves. Despite this, Basset Hounds are generally neither aggressive nor hostile towards humans and/or unfamiliar dogs.

Recommendations

The Basset Hound should be kept in a house with a small garden but given plenty of daily exercise. Also, since these dogs are very affectionate, they should not be left alone at home for several hours (which is true for most dogs!). They need work and feel most comfortable in their families. In addition, they also like to explore their limits and show that they have a will of their own. Therefore, the owners should be able to act, even if the hunting instinct manifests itself on walks. Therefore, experience with dogs is desirable and recommended.
