Alaskan Malamute: Diarrhea / Constipation

Does your dog have diarrhea?

There are various pathogens that can cause diarrhea.

One of the most unpleasant is certainly the coronavirus.

It is more common in sled dogs because they live in packs and socialize a lot with other packs. Most sled dog packs have gone through a coronavirus disease and developed antibodies, but viruses are constantly changing, so diarrhea can occur again and again. Unfortunately, there is no proven remedy against the coronavirus, so the dogs have to go through the disease and you can only fight the symptoms.

So let them starve, tea instead of water, Paspertin against nausea.

Dogs’ intestines are much shorter than humans, so they often have bloody diarrhea very quickly.

Buscopan slows down the movement of the intestines so that diarrhea is contained. If the dog has been starving for at least a day, you can slowly start feeding it again.

But please start with:

Either: Rice, cooked for a long time so that the grains of rice burst, i.e. mush 😉 with cooked chicken, and we don’t give our anything for 24 hours… there is black tea, all water pots are filled with tea. Infuse 3 bags of black tea with approx. 1L of boiling water for at least 10 minutes, fill up to 5 liters with water, and pour into the water bowls.

After 24 hours there are rusks, 2 rusks with black tea squishy, 5-7 times a day. Mix in a teaspoon of Stulmisan.

Or: the next day potatoes with tuna in oil. (the oil does it!)

Mash 1 net potato approx. 2.5 kg until mushy, and fold in 3 cans of tuna in oil and some boiled water so that it is not so dry. Administered in small portions 5 times a day (store in the refrigerator) and warm up in the microwave (approx. 15 seconds). Then slowly add a few grains of dry food and increase from meal to meal until you are back to the normal amount of food.

But dogs also get diarrhea when they eat snow! The frozen snow crystals injure the mucous membranes, bacteria can easily penetrate, resulting in severe bloody diarrhea! So please prevent your dog from eating snow.

If your puppy has diarrhea, please go to the vet IMMEDIATELY! Puppies lose too much fluid and can become dehydrated!!

Constipation

Sometimes dogs are constipated. Depending on what the dog has eaten, e.g. bones, the feces will be so hard that you have to do something about it. A handful of sauerkraut, 3 tablespoons of linseed oil, and 3 tablespoons of quark will help. You may have to repeat it if the dose of linseed oil is not enough, you have to approach it.

HOWEVER: If a Malamute shows pain, then go to the doctor immediately! Has an x-ray done to see if there are any foreign objects in the bowel or possibly an intussusception? (Malamutes also like to eat everything that is lying around, e.g. socks.) The intestines become necrotic and die off, so quick action is the order of the day! If you have abdominal pain, you shouldn’t delay seeing a doctor!
