The Alaskan Malamute dog breed is considered one of the largest sled dogs in the Arctic. Originally, these Nordic dogs were bred centuries ago by Inuit tribes of Mahlemiutes. They live in those regions of the Arctic Circle where temperatures can fall well below zero and snow and ice characterize the permafrost landscape.
As capable endurance athletes, Alaskan Malamutes have a robust constitution and good health. Because breeding is also very selective, there are hardly any breed-specific diseases. Because of their size, hip dysplasia is rare. On average, these dogs live 10 to 12 years. The only thing to be careful about is feeding – although malamutes are very picky about their food, they are prone to obesity. Therefore, you should adjust your diet exactly to the actual energy consumption.
