#1 Exactly where the Chinese crested dog originally came from is unclear:

while the breed's origins have long been believed to be in China, where they were bred to be skilled pied pipers on ships, alert guard dogs indoors, and (in a larger variety) eager hunting dogs recent DNA analyzes have revealed that the Chinese crested dog shares a common, probably African, ancestor with the Xoloitzcuintle, another hairless dog breed from Mexico.

#2 The probable mention of the breed as “African Hairless Terrier” in English texts from the 19th century also suggests this conclusion.

#3 During 1885 and 1926 they were often seen at dog shows in America, but by the 1970’s they almost disappeared.
