Dignified and sleek, these companion dogs were once used as an aid in hunting waterfowl. Poodles descended from hunting and shepherding dogs, and their ingrained instincts are still evident today. The exact origin of the breed is not known. It is believed that the Poodles share common ancestors with Barbetta dogs. Poodles were very popular at court as ornamental and companion dogs and working dogs. The breed more or less flourished in the Baroque period. At this point, the poodles were used in circus shows and in truffle-hunting work.
