An adult Bernese Mountain Dog needs sufficient daily exercise. He enjoys going for walks and can run surprisingly fast for his size when he wants to. Puppies and young dogs should not be trained to do this as their joints and skeleton are not fully developed. They only achieve this when they are 12-18 months old.
The Bernese Mountain Dog has a thick and fairly long coat. It requires maintenance to stay beautiful and felt-free. The coat changes twice a year, but also during the estrus cycle and whelping in bitches. Brush the coat once a week or once a day when it rains. Regular brushing makes it easier to remove dirt from the coat. The Bernese Mountain Dog, therefore, does not need to be bathed very often. Bathe him when he’s dirty.
