Why Do Cats Love Weird Places to Sleep?

There are reasons why cats choose to sleep high up on bookshelves, snuggled up deep in the back corner of a cupboard, or in the sink. It may seem strange to humans which sleeping place their kitty considers comfortable. But fur noses love to snuggle up at vantage points sheltered from the wind and are very imaginative when doing so.

Cats like to observe without being observed themselves and generally prefer to be left alone. They prefer to choose their sleeping places according to these criteria. In winter they also prefer to be warm and cozy, in summer they appreciate a cool place to sleep.

How Cats Choose Their Sleeping Places

Velvet paws are extremely creative when it comes to choosing the best place to sleep. After all, he has to meet a number of cat-specific requirements. The top priority here is temperature regulation and the feeling of safety and security. Depending on the cat’s personality, there is also a pronounced curiosity and the fun of observing, the need to hide or to attract attention.

In winter, for example, the furry friends can be found on hot water pipes, near the heater, on a running laptop, or in the laundry basket, where they snuggle up on the freshly washed and dried laundry. In summer, on the other hand, a bathtub, washbasin and a floor covering made of cool tiles are popular places to sleep.

Find the Cat! Weird Places to Nap

Sometimes it’s not so easy to find cats when they’re perched high up on the bookshelf at their perch. Other kitties love to squeeze into tiny boxes or bowls because it’s so nice and warm in there. Warmth is also the reason why the velvet paws like to make themselves comfortable right next to their favorite person when they are trying to sleep themselves. House tigers looking for attention like to spread out on computer keyboards, newspapers, or books that owners try to read.

Attention, Dangerous Sleeping Place!

It can also happen that cats hide in dangerous places to doze off. In the summer the kitty sometimes curls up in the washing machine drum, in the winter she might just snooze in the dryer. As a precaution, therefore, take a close look before you fill the drum with laundry and start the devices.

Particularly sophisticated hiding places behind open drawers or behind cupboards and bed drawers can also be risky. Occasionally, house cats even crawl behind household appliances. So if the velvet paw is hard to find, look carefully everywhere and don’t close drawers suddenly and forcefully.
