What Diseases Do Chihuahuas Get?

Chihuahuas can live up to 20 years. They are sturdy and durable. Of course, not all representatives of the breed achieve such a nice lifespan. Diseases, for example, can send the Chihuahua over the rainbow bridge prematurely.

Whether and how often your Chihuahua will get sick cannot of course be predicted in advance. Some dogs only see the vet for their vaccinations, others may be in the waiting room very regularly.

Choosing the right puppy, however, can minimize the risk of certain diseases and inherited conditions. Only buy a Chihuahua from a reputable breeder who has their breeding animals’ health checked.

Stay away from fragile Teacup Chihuahuas. Also, don’t fall for dubious breeders and propagators.

Housing conditions also affect how often a Chihuahua gets sick. A species-appropriate, hygienic home is important. The Chihuahua also needs a permanent reference person, good food, plenty of exercises, and employment. All this keeps him mentally and physically fit.

Of course, in addition to hereditary diseases, Chihuahuas can also suffer from occasional diarrhea or vomiting. Parasites are also caught by many dogs during their lifetime. However, worming and flea cures quickly put an end to the spook.
