The Shar-Pei was once a guard dog and pit fighter. Today he is primarily a companion dog, although he retains his fighting toughness. He can be aggressive towards other dogs and people, so socialization and training from a young age are important.
Because of its short nose, the Shar-Pei is prone to overheating. Keep him inside with a fan or air conditioning during the hot summer months. Like other short-nosed breeds, he is prone to snoring, wheezing, and is terrible at jogging.
