The Border Terrier originated in the mountains between northern England and southern Scotland. The breed’s character and form evolved from its use as a hound and, on the other hand, guarding sheep and lambs from foxes. It was important that the Border Terrier got along well with the other hounds and terriers and had enough sense to stay out of trouble with the pack and the horses. Contrary to popular belief, Border Terriers did not run with the hounds but followed the horses and had to be ready to pluck the fox from its burrow and keep it at bay for as long as necessary.
