Superfood: Are Fruits and Vegetables Useful for Cats?

When considering the diet for their pets, the first thing many cat owners think about is that cats are “carnivores”. That is also perfectly correct. For this reason, some owners are also skeptical about cat foods containing fruits or vegetables. It is true that it would be of little use to cats if you put a fresh mango or carrot on their plate. Not only would they hardly like the fruit or vegetables, but they could also just digest them poorly. Nevertheless, valuable components can be extracted from fruits and vegetables, so-called superfoods, which can contribute to the well-being of cats. The valuable ingredients are virtually “pre-digested” and cats with their specialized digestive tract can also benefit from them!

What is a Superfood?

Superfood is actually a term coined by the advertising industry. They are fruits, vegetables, and herbs that contain a particularly large number of healthy nutrients and thus support a well-functioning organism. They have long since found their way into the daily diet of many people. In this way, high-quality minerals and trace elements as well as antioxidants that are able to bind so-called aggressive “oxygen radicals” in the cells and thus ensure effective cell protection are supplied to the body in a natural way.

Since the term “superfood” is not clearly defined, one could go so far as to subordinate other food components to it. A real cat superfood would then be the liver, for example, which provides carnivores with plenty of vitamin A for healthy skin.

Superfood for Cats

So if you add these minerals, trace elements, and antioxidants from particularly valuable foods to cat food, you also get superfoods for your cat, which can support the well-being of the beloved fur nose.

It should always be ensured that the fruits and vegetables used in it are also safe for cats. Because not everything that is good for us also makes sense for your house cat. And last but not least, the taste counts! What use is the best food with excellent nutrients if it is not eaten? Therefore, the good ingredients should ideally be fed combined with a high proportion of meat or fish. Valuable proteins and lipids are also absorbed directly and good acceptance is ensured.

There should be something for every taste because cats can now also buy them in a number of forms: for example as wet food, tabs, pastes, and sticks. Your velvet paws are sure to find their favorite superfood snack there too.

If you Have the Choice, You Are Spoiled for Choice: Superfood Variants

Superfoods are often used to specifically support certain processes in the organism. For example, there are superfood treats whose composition is designed to support the metabolism of skin and coat or to strengthen the immune system. Variants are also available for dental care. If it is ensured that your cat has all the necessary nutrients available elsewhere in sufficient quantities, you do not necessarily have to feed them. But superfoods can help you to make a varied contribution to a healthy diet for your cat – including rewarding.
