The starting point for breeding was a breed of small, wire-haired dogs called "Smousje". Today's Brussels Griffon breed was created by crossing with a ruby-colored King Charles Spaniel and a Pug. However, over time, monarchs began to take a liking to the Brussels Griffon breed and it gained notoriety, largely due to the interest of Queen Marie-Henriette.
