Ibizan Hound Dog Breed Info

The Podenco Ibicenco is an agile and intelligent dog whose training is not easy. The Podenco Ibicenco is used for hunting small game. As with all Podencos, typical prey is the wild rabbit.

One assumption about the origin of this breed is that its progenitor is the Tesem, which is also associated with the pharaoh hound (Kelb tal-Fenek) native to Malta.

Care

The short-haired Podenco only needs to be groomed with a rubber brush from time to time; occasional brushing is also sufficient for the rough-haired variety

Temperament

Quiet and affectionate, very loyal to his master, yet relatively independent, alert, attentive, willing to learn, quite obedient, and great endurance. The Podenco Ibicenco has an extremely strong hunting instinct.

Upbringing

The dog likes to learn and learns quickly. You can let him participate in a variety of dog sports if you have raised him calmly and carefully. The animals have a well-developed feeling for their owner’s voice – a friendly encouragement is usually more successful than a severe rebuke.

Compatibility

The dogs get along very well with children, but they take a rather wait-and-see attitude towards strangers. When the dog realizes that the strange visitor is up to no harm, the ice is quickly broken. Podenco males can be somewhat dominant over other males. There shouldn’t be any problems with the house cat if the dog has been accustomed to this roommate from an early age.

Movement

Despite the great adaptability of this breed – you can keep them in an apartment – the dogs need a lot of exercises. You can let the dog run next to the bike, but only when it is fully grown. Some Podencos prefer to follow their own nose to discover something interesting; they remain real hunting dogs.

Therefore, a sufficiently high fence should be built around the property, because the representatives of this breed easily jump up to two meters high; sometimes it even seems as if they can “climb” over fences. Most Podencos like to retrieve, they are also suitable for coursing.

Particularities

The Podenco Ibicenco is also referred to as a “half greyhound” because it does not hunt by sight alone, but also by nose and ear. It is not suitable for being kept in a kennel the variable coloring.
