These hairless dogs are divided into six different breeds, all of which are very rare but extremely interesting for their biological and genetic characteristics.
In addition to the Xoloitzcuintle or Mexican Hairless Dog, of which there are two sizes (large and miniature), the Peruvian Hairless Dog, which comes in three sizes, and the Chinese Crested Dog, are hairless dogs that should be mentioned.
Xoloitzcuintle makes an excellent companion dog
Appearance
The wedge-shaped head has a slightly pronounced stop and a pointed muzzle. The large ears are either folded back or erect. The lids of the chestnut or yellow eyes are adorned with a liver or pink rim.
Many specimens have incomplete dentition. The Xoloitzcuintle has no coat at all, while the Chinese Crested still has a more or less sparse tuft of wiry hair on the head and tail end.
The Peruvian hairless dog may have the same coat of hair as the Chinese crested dog, but it does not always have to be present. The skin of this breed must always be smooth, soft, wrinkle-free, and not warm to the touch. Gray or slate gray often predominates with more or less clear spots, black, white, spotted, etc.
The route is worn over the back or in a ring but never ringed. The last two-thirds are decorated with a tassel. The Peruvian Hairless Dog carries the tail low when at rest and elevated when moving.
Care
Since the Mexican Hairless Dog has no fur, all attention is focused on caring for the skin. First of all, it must be well protected against the sun’s rays, otherwise, burns could occur.
Dogs that are prepared for shows usually have their skin scrubbed with an exfoliating cream (intended for humans) to remove dead skin cells and keep the skin velvety. The most important thing is that the skin becomes elastic and smooth – which can be achieved with a good cream or lotion. Sometimes the skin is also rubbed with oil.
Temperament
All of these dogs make excellent companion dogs with extremely gentle, happy, and affectionate personalities. No matter how small they are, they are very brave and wary of strangers. Due to their sensitive character, however, they must be raised with a gentle hand.
Upbringing
The Mexican Hairless Dog does not actually need any special training.
Compatibility
The conspicuous dogs usually get along well with their own kind, with all other pets and children.
Movement
The representatives of this breed need a very little exercise. However, you should let the dog run and play regularly, and he also likes to accompany his master everywhere, even when on a leash.
Particularities
The Xoloitzcuintle is a strange and unusual dog that needs more publicity to save the breed from extinction.
Historical classification
There are various conflicting theories about the origin of hairless dogs. Some believe they are ancient breeds that evolved through genetic mutations into the form we know today. Others are of the opinion that these dogs originated in China, from where they came to America a long time ago. Images from pre-Incan times serve as proof of this. Peru is a center of hairless dog breeding.
