German Hound Dog Breed Info

The German Bracke is a lighter, elegant, high-legged, and powerful dog with a proud head posture. The German Bracken Club, founded in Olpe in 1896, brought together the Northwest German Bracken breeds that still existed at the time. Since 1900, the unit type has been officially called the “German Bracke”.

Care

A German Hound needs relatively little grooming. From time to time you should go over the coat with a rubber brush to remove the loose hair. The ear canals should be checked regularly for cleanliness. When it comes to clawing care, one must not forget that German Hounds are said to have long claws.

Character

Friendly, social, shy, curious, quite obedient, yet independent and alert. The German Hound has a very good nose and is an excellent hunting dog.

Upbringing

The education of these dogs does not make any special demands. They quickly understood what was required of them. However, they should not be “drilled” – that stifles their open and friendly character. With patience, love, and consistency you can get much further with these dogs.

Compatibility

German Hounds are social dogs, so companionship with other breeds should be no problem. They also get along well with children. If strangers come or if he senses danger, the dog will indicate this audibly. Bracken should be introduced to cats and other pets from an early age.

Movement

Bracken is an excellent scent hound and is mostly used for hare hunting and for rabbits and foxes. If you don’t intend to go hunting with your dog, you should find other ways to ensure adequate exercise. German Bracken also has the typical hunting dog tendency to “run away” as soon as an interesting track is offered. They should therefore not be allowed to run around unleashed.
