History of the Cavalier Spaniel
These four-legged friends are an old breed. They are direct descendants of the dogs of the British aristocracy. Due to its friendly nature, the Cavalier Spaniel served as a playmate for royal children or warmed the beds of noble ladies. There are written records of these animals serving as companion dogs since the Middle Ages. Her name goes back to King Charles I, who was never seen without his little companion. Since dogs must first of all look cute and extravagant, in later years they were bred according to the children’s scheme. As a result, the breed has changed as follows:
- The muzzle was getting shorter.
- The head has become more rounded.
- The eyes got bigger.
As a result, the former King Charles Spaniel became barely recognizable over time. Therefore, breeders decided to bring the old breed back to life. In 1928 they founded a club to promote the Cavalier King Charles Spaniels in England. In 1945, the new breed of dog was officially recognized by the Kennel Club.
Features of the Breed
Four-legged friends are especially cuddly and love to be petted and cuddled all day long. In addition, the Cavalier King Charles Spaniel wins hearts with his temperament, because he is not prone to nervousness and does not show aggressive behavior.
Therefore, it is not only suitable for experienced dog owners, but also an ideal companion for beginners. He is easy to train, learns quickly, and is, therefore, a loyal companion for young and old alike. For this reason, he is an ideal candidate for a family and gets along well with other pets. Even when meeting strangers, he is by no means intrusive and joyfully greets them. Thanks to his friendly nature, every animal lover will quickly fall in love with him.
The Cavalier Spaniel is a pleasant companion. Regular walks are enough for him, during which he gladly takes out, for example, sticks. For this reason, this breed is also ideal for seniors. If you want to take your faithful four-legged friend along for a run, you should be careful not to run too fast or too long. He is also a real water rat and looks forward to swimming in the lake on warm days.

Also in terms of grooming, this purebred dog is relatively easy to handle. To keep the fur supple and shiny, it should be combed regularly. You should especially work on the ears and paws so that they do not get tangled.
The eyes also need to be cleaned to prevent inflammation. Despite its small size, the Cavalier King Charles Spaniel is a hardy dog that is not very susceptible to disease. However, due to reverse breeding and the resulting small breeding base, there are some hereditary diseases. The heart and nerves are affected. But with a healthy diet, the risk of heart disease in the Cavalier Spaniel can be reduced. However, due to neurological dysfunction, some animals experience spontaneous muscle spasms. In order not to pass on these diseases to future generations, it is therefore important to breed only healthy dogs. In this way, hereditary diseases can be gradually eradicated.
