Cancer In Pets

What do I do if my animal has cancer? When a malignant tumor is diagnosed in animals, this is often associated with strong emotions for the animal owner. Over the years spent together, the pet has become a best friend and a beloved member of the family. As a result of the “cancer” diagnosis, serious decisions must now be made by its owner. Good veterinary care is particularly important in such situations. The well-being of the animal must be the focus of veterinary care, but the individual situation and possibilities of the animal owner must also be taken into account.

What Is Cancer

Cancer is an umbrella term for a series of tumor diseases in which certain tumor cells multiply and degenerate uncontrollably. These tumor cells can multiply locally. In the course of the disease, however, the degenerated cells can also spread via the bloodstream or the lymphatic system (metastases).

What Are The Causes Of Cancer In Animals?

A complex interplay of both genetic factors and environmental influences is thought to trigger tumor diseases. Find out more about the possible causes here.

How Does A Tumor Develop?

In principle, a tumor can develop in any organ or tissue of the body and develop malignant or benign characteristics. Read more about tumor development and metastasis here.

How Are Tumors Manifested?

The symptoms of a tumor are usually non-specific and vary, just as there are a large number of different tumors and tumor diseases. The symptoms are often similar to those of other diseases. It is therefore very difficult for the layperson to recognize a tumor disease, especially when internal organs are affected.

The pet owner often only observes general signs of illness, e.g. fatigue, weight loss, loss of appetite, or even lameness, which he cannot explain. A visit to the vet is highly recommended if unclear symptoms of the disease persist for several days or worsen.

The easiest tumors to notice are those that are in or under the skin. The pet owner can feel small knots or hardening.

How Is Cancer Diagnosed?

A thorough clinical examination of the whole animal, including all organ systems, gives the first indications of a tumor. Find out more about the various diagnostic options here.

How Can A Tumor Disease Be Treated?

Depending on the type of tumor, therapy for tumor diseases can be a combination of chemotherapy, surgical removal of tumor tissue, and radiation therapy. Find out more about the individual therapy options here.
