King Charles Spaniel is a friendly, good-natured, small companion dog that is loyal to its people. It is easy to train with loving consistency and is therefore also suitable for dog beginners.
Origin and history
King Charles Spaniel originally descended from hunting Spaniels, which became popular companion dogs among European nobility in the 17th century. These small Spaniels were particularly appreciated at the court of Charles I and Charles II, which is well documented by pictures of old masters. The breed was first registered with the Kennel Club in 1892. At the beginning of the 20th century, some breeders tried to breed back the original, slightly larger type with a longer snout. The Cavalier King Charles Spaniel, which is a little more widespread today, developed from this line.
Appearance
With a maximum body weight of 6.5 kg, King Charles Spaniel is a Toy Spaniel. It has a compact body, rather large, wide-set dark eyes, and long, low-set lop ears. The snout is significantly shorter than its cousin, the Cavalier King Charles Spaniel.
The coat is long and silky, slightly wavy but not curly. Legs, ears, and tail are richly fringed. King Charles Spaniel is bred in 4 colors: black and tan, white and red, and solid red or tricolor (black and white with tan markings).
Nature
A fun-loving and friendly companion dog, King Charles Spaniel is very affectionate and forms a close bond with its humans. It is reserved for strangers but shows neither nervousness nor fear. It is also very friendly when dealing with other dogs and does not start a fight of its own accord.
Indoors, King Charles Spaniel is calm, outdoors he shows his temper but is not prone to straying. It loves long walks and is fun with everyone. It needs close contact with its people and would like to be there everywhere. Due to its small size and its peaceful character, the uncomplicated King Charles Spaniel is an ideal companion for all situations in life. It can also be kept well in a city apartment. King Charles Spaniel is docile, smart, and easy to train. Even people who are inexperienced with dogs will have fun with the gentle, loyal little fellow. The long hair does not require any complex care.
