Alaskan Malamute: Polyneuropathy

Polyneuropathy, abbreviated to AMPN, is a disease that is inherited through a recessive gene.

A proper breeder in the VDH has his dogs examined in order to breed healthy dogs.

The gene itself is not a problem, the dog and we too carry thousands of recessive genes, and a recessive gene does not cause the dog any problems, but mating two gene carriers results in sick dogs.

Seriously sick dogs! In the mild form, a dog cannot walk properly later, in the severe form, the esophagus and trachea may be affected and puppies suffocate in the first few months of their lives.

So buy your dog from a VDH / AMC breeder and let them show you the test results of both parents! Only if one parent is not a gene carrier do you have the certainty of buying a PN healthy dog! A good breeder will also give you copies of the test results on PM with your puppy’s papers.

Dogs without papers not only have no papers, but also no examined ancestors!

Worse still, often enough are undocumented dogs from parent breeds that have been denied permission to breed. this is refused if a dog does not meet the requirements in the examination results, or the appearance does not correspond to the requirements of the standard, even if the parent animals come from “perfect parents”.

Think carefully! For every part of daily use, which you often only use for a few years, you read test results and inquire. For a partner for the next 12 years, you should also check everything before committing!
