The Beagle in its present form originated in England, where it was bred as a hunting dog for smaller games that needed tracking. His ancestors seem to have lived in southern France around 1400. Medium-sized, tireless hunters, and equipped with a very good sense of smell, these mottled and piebald dogs so impressed the British during the Hundred Years’ War that they took them with them and used them for hunting as well. This breed was referred to as Southern Hounds.
