The first mention of the beagle, whose exact origin of the name is unclear, appears in 1515 in the household books of Henry VIII. There a so-called “Keeper of the Beagles” is rewarded. However, it was not until 1890 that the Beagle was recognized as a separate dog breed by the English Kennel Club.
