6 Annoying Behaviors of Huskies

#4 Climb over the fence

Some huskies seem to have chosen climbing as a hobby. And not on mountains, but over your garden fence. Many owners ask themselves: “Why is he doing this?”. The answer is simple: "To get to the other side." Huskies are curious and some greedy too. They smell something interesting and then they want to go there. Even a low fence won't stop them.

There are several solutions: Raise your fence so that your husky can no longer climb over it. Bevel the top of the fence, as is sometimes seen with fences around security structures, or build a large covered kennel for unsupervised exercise.

Experts recommend so-called plank fences. For example, pine fences in a curved design or with a straight edge. Huskies have a much harder time climbing them than a chain link fence. They also block your dog's view and reduce the temptation to leave the garden.

There are also electric fences for dogs, such as those used on horse paddocks, for example. These are not without controversy and you have to decide for yourself whether you want to use such an electric fence.

Also, make sure that your dog does not have any "climbing aids" to make it easier for him to climb. There should be no compost piles, piles of wood, or other items near the fence for your husky to use.

#5 Jump high

While you may find it cute when puppies jump up on you, it's not cute when it comes to 45-pound huskies. It can even be very dangerous for children and the elderly. You lose your balance and fall.

Huskies jump up on people to get attention. Which is what happens. You get attention from the jumper, positive or negative. The husky doesn't care, the main thing is a human reaction.

Conversely, do not pay attention to your husky if he jumps at you or others. Or any other unwanted behavior. Play Be A Tree. Just stand there and ignore the dog. Dogs don't jump up trees because they're uninteresting. Exception, a cat or a squirrel is in the tree.

When your dog stands still on all four paws, give him praise and a treat. Pet him and give him attention. As soon as he jumps at you again, stop all attention immediately. In order for this education to be successful, you have to teach this behavior to all guests, willy-nilly. Children in particular find it really nice to romp around with the dog. Nevertheless, remain strict, with dog and child. Because you know that with huskies, you only get anywhere if you stay consistent.

#6 Snap and nibble

There are huskies who like to chew and nibble on their owners' fingers and hands. You usually get used to this when you are a pup. Then you might find it funny, but puppies should also learn what they are allowed to chew and what not.

And the playful chewing can also lead to a real bite. Huskies in particular do not know their bite power, so puppies should be trained not to chew on people.

Sometimes just letting the puppy or dog know that they're hurting you is enough. Small puppies squeak when pinched by their siblings. Say “Ouch” high and loudly and stop paying him any attention.

If huskies didn't learn their limits as puppies and that they hurt people, that's a longer task for huskies known for being stubborn. Here I recommend finding a local dog trainer and specifically addressing this problem.
