If you train your Rottweiler well, he'll make a great partner in any sporting activity. The breed was primarily bred to be a working dog rather than an endurance runner. So you don't need to go jogging with him as often, but rather take him with you to dog sports. Due to its agility and good handling, it is also particularly suitable for obedience. Here he can prove his skills and at the same time learn that you are the higher-ranking family member. The Rotti is just as well suited as a guard dog, as it attentively and conscientiously protects the house and yard of its family.

The breed is particularly popular for military or police service because of its strong nerves and strong protective instinct. With more than 1,500 bred military dogs, the Kaisersteinbruch Military Dog Center in Austria is the largest Rottweiler kennel in the world. The dogs are mainly used to guard technical facilities, airports, ammunition depots, and restricted areas. The recognized service dog is also active in mountain and water rescue.

Because the breed often appears scary and aggressive on the outside, films and advertising campaigns use the Rottweiler as a symbol of fear. In the Spanish film “Rottweiler”, for example, a brutal dog that is half animal and half machine play the leading role. Dogs are also often portrayed as aggressive and evil in commercials. In Great Britain, one even speaks of "Rottweiler politics" in political debates in which an opponent is massively attacked.
