12 Interesting Facts About Swiss Mountain Dogs You Probably Didn't Know

These Swiss Mountain Dogs from the Appenzellerland are excellent working dogs, but also loyal and bright members of the family.

#1 This breed has its origins in the Appenzellerland, a hilly pasture area in Switzerland.

The slightly wedge-shaped head with the triangular hanging ears usually has a white blaze that runs down from the top of the head to the muzzle and completely or partially encloses it. The white fur runs down from the chin to the broad, deep chest, but usually only reappears on all four paws and the tip of the tail. The tail itself is set high and is also often called the "post horn" because of its narrow roll over the croup.

#2 The Appenzeller Sennenhund was first mentioned in 1853 in a Swiss publication called “Tierleben der Alpenwelt” and described as a housekeeper and herding dog (mainly of cattle).

But it was not until 1906 that the first breeding club for this breed was founded, the "Appenzeller Sennenhunde Club", which made it its goal to keep the dog breed purebred with entries in the "Appenzeller Hundestammbuch" and to promote it - fitness for use is immensely more important than that Beauty in appearance. Fortunately, the Appenzeller Sennenhund combines both the one and the other in one animal.

#3 In 1914 the cynologist Albert Heim set up the first valid breed standard, followed in 2003 by the first official FCI breed standard.
