The Cairn Terrier is a typical terrier: extremely adaptable, but with solid self-confidence. Despite its small size, the Cairn Terrier appears bold and sometimes downright dominant. #1 The Cairn Terrier comes from the Scottish highlands, where it was mainly used for fox hunting. It owes its name to the “cairns”, i.e. the burrows that foxes build in screes.

#2 The breed is one of the oldest terrier breeds in Great Britain, it is sometimes even referred to as the archetype of all Scottish terriers.

#3 It was registered in the late 19th century as a short-haired variant of the Skye Terrier and was only approved as a separate breed under the name Cairn Terrier in 1910 after protests from Skye breeders.
