The roots of Berger de Brie – better known today as Briard – go back a long way. The good-natured and dutiful shepherd dog became a versatile all-rounder who loves sporting activities and his family more than anything.
#1 For a long time, the Briard was known as Chiens de Berger français de Plaine (French Dutch Shepherd Dog) because it was originally kept as a dutiful shepherd dog in the French lowlands.
#2 The “Brie dog” was mentioned as early as the 18th century, but the history of its ancestors probably dates back to the 14th century. During both world wars, the breed was used in the French army, where it served as a guard and medical dog.
#3 Today it is mainly kept as a guard and family dog, but is also used as a therapy and rescue dog.
The shaggy giant wants to dedicate his body and soul to his task, so a pure household and farm dog attitude is less suitable for him.
