The Dalmatian is known as an athletic and capable dog and is well placed with an average life expectancy of 10 to 13 years. Despite this, individual specimens of this breed can suffer from certain breed-specific health issues. Dogs with a high white coat have a higher likelihood of becoming deaf in one or both ears during their lifetime. The triggering gene for this connection between coat color and hearing has not yet been found, which makes breeding selection difficult.
