Why Cats Like to Lie Down on Paper

Cats amaze and amuse their favorite people with the strangest of habits. They like to sit or lie down on paper, even if a soft carpet is laid out all around. Sometimes they make themselves comfortable in the books, newspapers, or magazines that their people are reading. Why is your cat doing that?

Paper is an interesting material for cats for a number of reasons that address many of their needs. This satisfies their curiosity, their desire for safety, warmth, and security, and they get cuddles and attention when they disturb their loved ones while reading.

Paper is Nice & Warm & Cats Feel Safe

Cardboard, newspaper, and the like are excellent insulation materials. So when cats like to lie down on paper that’s just lying around, it’s usually because it’s nice and warm there. And furry friends like warm places best. In addition, paper absorbs odors well. If you have touched the leaf first and your cat then mixes in her own scents by patting, rubbing its head, or sitting down, it will be a familiar and comforting smell to it.

Fur Noses Want To Be Noticed

Cats have very keen senses and can sense the mood of their favorite people very well. When we read, we tend to be calm, focused, relaxed, and content. The fur noses find this very pleasant and are happy to keep us company. However, they don’t appreciate being ignored so much, so they demand our attention when we’re not paying attention to them. Since they realize that the focus is on the piece of paper in front of our noses, they lie down right there. Don’t scare your cat away at such moments, after all, it means it is a sign of love when it tries to get your attention. The best thing to do is take a little break from reading and have a cuddle session instead.

Curiosity: Paper Makes Interesting Noises

That being said, cats are also naturally curious and enjoy exploring things around them. the paper crackles and rustles; it makes noises that might also indicate prey, and of course, the cat has to check that thoroughly. Despite the cuteness, if your cat is playing with paper, keep a close eye on it so that when it rips the paper, it doesn’t accidentally swallow too much and risk an intestinal obstruction. Instead, offer more frequent play sessions with safe toys.
