Sudden Blindness In Cats

The fact that the cat suddenly no longer seems to see well can be the result of both an acute and a chronic process, the signs of which have just not yet been noticed.

Causes

Blunt trauma that causes bruising of the eye can blind the cat. In glaucoma, better known as “glaucoma”, the pressure inside the eye increases so much that vision can be irretrievably lost. Inflammation in the eye or tumors can develop unnoticed and lead to blindness. Infectious diseases such as B. leukemia can destroy the eyes. Diabetes mellitus damages the retina of the cat just like poisoning e.g. with antifreeze or high blood pressure.

Symptoms

Signs of a vision problem may include startle, difficulty orienting, tripping over objects, missing the target e.g. the window sill when jumping, etc. In some cases, the eye is altered, e.g. enlarged, reddened, or appears cloudy. If the cats are in pain, they close their eyes.

Measures

As the owner, you cannot do anything for your cat. She needs to go to the vet as soon as possible.

Prevention

With regular health checks, diseases affecting the eyes can be recognized and treated in good time. Poisons should always be kept in a place where cats cannot reach.
