Shetland Sheepdog (Sheltie) – Intelligent Herding Dog

About the Shetland Sheepdog, like many other dog breeds, you can already tell by the name where they came from: namely, from the Shetland Islands near Scotland, to which the Shetland ponies and little Shetland sheep also owe their names.

Everything seems a little shorter here – but small ones are often really big. Thus, the Shetland Sheepdog was a very large working dog: originally bred from the Border Collie and Greenland dogs, they were used to graze sheep, to drive them, and to guard the house and yard. Its thick fur coat optimally protected from the harsh conditions of the islands. But herding skills can still be improved, as the breeders have found. Later, they crossed Collies, and this is how today’s external resemblance appeared.

Meanwhile, the little Sheltie is almost never used as a herding dog, although it enthusiastically takes on this task, if it is entrusted. However, it has established itself as a popular companion or rescue dog and therapist.

General

  • FCI Group 1: Cattle and Cattle Dogs (excluding Swiss Mountain Dogs).
  • Section 1: Shepherds
  • Height: 37 centimeters (males); 36 centimeters (females)
  • Colors: sable, tricolor, blue merle, black and white, black and tan.

Housing Tips: The Shetland Sheepdog can be kept indoors, but needs enough exercise, so a rural environment is recommended. Dog sports are a good way to give dogs extra support. Therefore, you should have the time and desire to actively engage with the dog, both physically and mentally.

Activity

Shelties are often found in canine sports such as agility, obedience, or dog dancing, as they, like their Collie and Border Collie cousins, are very intelligent and persistent.

Physical and mental fitness needs to be developed and used. Therefore, long walks are important. In addition, four-legged friends are happy when they are taught new tricks or when they are observed with little tasks.

Features of the Breed

Collie-like dogs are not only persistent and intelligent but also especially capable and willing to learn. In addition, their character is considered to be friendly, gentle, lively, and alert. On the good side, the Shelties become very loyal companions who also enjoy looking after the house and yard. In doing so, however, they are not aggressive – just a little reserved towards strangers.

Recommendations

The Shetland Sheepdog can be kept in an apartment because of its size – the height at the withers is about 37 centimeters. However, four-legged friends need to move a lot, so a more rural environment is recommended. In addition, dogs should be encouraged mentally and physically in addition to walking, for which, for example, canine sports are ideal.

Thus, the Shetland Sheepdog is ideal for people who would like to play sports with their dog and who have the time and desire to work with the animal. Because the more busy Shepherd dogs are, the more balanced they are.
