Make Your Own Cat Food: Here’s How

Is your cat tired of the endless canned food? Then simply conjure up something on his plate yourself! We show you how to cook the perfect meal for your fur ball.

Before cooking

When shopping, make sure that you don’t just cover the need for meat. Meat or fish can be the basis of the dish, but you should also pay attention to protein, fat, carbohydrates, vitamins, and minerals. So also buy rice, vegetables, butter, eggs, milk or herbs. The ideal composition depends on the age of the cat, whether it is an outdoor cat, lazy, or more active. Be sure to ask your veterinarian about this, so that your cat is supplied with all the nutrients it needs.

You can be very creative with the menu design and only have to avoid foods that are harmful to cats.

The preparation

The first question here is: raw or not? If your darling likes his food raw, you have to make sure that the meat is very fresh and not contaminated with bacteria. However, you should definitely avoid raw pork (here we explain why) and only feed raw liver in moderation, as it can promote a vitamin A excess.

Our velvet paws love raw offal, but you should remove the fat before feeding, as most animals do not like it. Kidneys, on the other hand, are also taboo when they are raw because as filter organs they contain too many pollutants.

If you prefer to cook, you should first prepare rice or cereal flakes and digestible vegetables such as carrots, broccoli, potatoes, or spinach. Just try different variants here. Then add some butter and fresh herbs such as B. Add parsley and cook the mixture until everything is soft and digestible. Even a pinch of salt is allowed, but you shouldn’t season too much.

Regulate the consistency a little with water and then add the meat, either raw or cooked. You can then freeze small portions and thaw them if necessary, or serve them fresh straight away. The basic recipe is ready!

Two recipe ideas

In principle, you are completely free here, as long as you avoid the taboo foods (read here what they are). Just try out different dishes and see what your cat likes best. These two dishes make almost every cat’s mouth water:

Hearty for colder days

  • 1 calf’s foot
  • 2 chicken wings
  • carrots
  • Herbs

First, boil the calf’s foot and drain while warm. Then reduce the resulting broth a little and cook the two chicken wings in it. Then put the meat with skin and broth in a mold together with the previously chopped carrots. Let everything cool down and remove the layer of fat – add a few herbs for the finishing touch. You already have a hearty jelly, which can provide a lot of energy, especially for outdoor cats.

For fish fans

  • calamari
  • 1 egg
  • 1 tbsp olive oil

Cut the small squid rings into narrow strips and boil them in hot water. The egg is also boiled. Then mix the chopped egg yolk with a tablespoon of olive oil and use the whole thing as a sauce for the calamari. The delicious seafood antipasti for furry Italy lovers are ready.
