Make Your Own Cat Food

Healthy cat food is the cornerstone for a long and healthy cat life. If you enjoy cooking, you can also prepare a quality meal for your cat in between meals. Find out how here.

Cats are said to be very picky about food. At the same time, however, they are also curious. Even if you don’t want to jump straight into BARF, you can occasionally prepare a tasty meal for your cat yourself. However, if you feed your cat regularly with home-cooked food, you should definitely consult a cat nutritionist. This is the only way to ensure that your cat gets all the nutrients it needs.

Make Cat Food Yourself: Important Tips

Basically, you should pay attention to the following things when you cook something for your cat yourself:

  • If you give your cat raw beef, lamb, or poultry heart, cut off the fat beforehand, the cat doesn’t like it.
  • You should only give raw liver in small amounts because it contains e.g. has a strong laxative effect.
  • The kidneys are filter organs for pollutants and should not be fed to the cat raw, but should still be soaked in milk for a few hours before cooking.
  • Avoid spices. They are not healthy for cats.

The Basic Recipe For Homemade Cat Food

To prepare a small dish for your cat yourself, you can do the following:

  • One part rice (or oatmeal, cereal, maize) with two parts chopped veggies (carrots, broccoli, asparagus, spinach, etc., more or less to taste, but no leeks/onions) along with a pinch of salt and a Cook a tablespoon of butter until soft
  • Mix everything well, use the cooking water to create the desired consistency, and freeze portions with the raw meat ration or feed them straight away.
  • You can also cook the meat if you don’t want to give anything raw and your cat accepts cooked meat.
  • After defrosting or before feeding, add a fresh mineral-vitamin mixture and serve lukewarm.

Your imagination is almost the limit as long as you don’t use foods that are toxic to cats. You can achieve variety by using different types of vegetables depending on the season and by using rice one time and oatmeal or something similar the other time. You have to test what your cat accepts or refuses.
