Large Cat Breeds: Tips for Buying

Maine Coon, Norwegian Forest Cat, Savannah, or Ragdoll: If a representative of a large cat breed is to move in with you, there are a few special things to consider. With a few tips, everything is quickly ready for your new pet.

Whether it’s a litter box, a scratching post, or a basket: the accessories for large cat breeds should be in the same XXL format as the house cat itself. You can get the right items in pet shops or online and should ensure that they are of good quality for the sake of stability.

Stable Equipment & Enough Space

Stability is essential, especially for scratching posts. If a four-legged friend weighing ten or twelve kilograms gets going, its gymnastics equipment must of course be able to withstand it. It is best to attach the scratching opportunity to the wall or ceiling.

If you are wondering whether your apartment or house is large enough for representatives of large cat breeds, the specificity of the particular breed plays an important role. A Savannah or a Bengal cat, for example, is not only large but also incredibly active. These breeds of cats need a lot of space and, preferably, outdoor space to be able to let off steam.

On the other hand, calmer cat species such as the Ragdoll can be kept in the apartment quite easily and do not need as much space. The Maine Coon and the Norwegian Forest cat are also happy with smaller apartments – the main thing is that they have plenty of opportunities to climb, play and, of course, cuddle with their owners.

Grooming & Feeding Large Cat Breeds

Because some large cat breeds are prone to joint disorders such as hip dysplasia, it’s important to get regular veterinary check-ups. Make sure that your cat does not become overweight and that it is fed a healthy and balanced diet. While your XXL house tiger is still growing, great importance should be attached to the balanced composition of the food for young, large cats. Your vet will be happy to advise you on this.
