Keeping Snakes In The Terrarium

Attitude in the terrarium

Room minimum requirements: 120 x 50 x 70 cm (L x W x H)

Lighting: fluorescent tubes.

  • Cover all sources of light and heat well, as animals can burn themselves.
  • Snakes do not necessarily need UV light, they usually get enough vitamin D3 and calcium from food animals.
  • Basic lighting should always be available.
  • Nocturnal species: Also stimulate day-night rhythm.
  • Diurnal species: Bright and radiant
  • Humidity: all snakes should have drinking water available at all times.

Humidity: Important! Control with hygrometer

Temperature/Heat:

  • Heating mat or heating cable, local heat islands in the terrarium
  • Important! Always cover well to avoid burns
  • Control with thermometer

Soil substrates

  • Sand: loose, sometimes mixed with fine gravel, dry and moist
  • Beechwood shavings: Different sizes, mold quickly when slightly damp (only very dry terrariums)
  • Pine bark: Different sizes, also suitable for moderately humid terrariums
  • Peat: Does not mold, suitable for rainforest terrariums
  • Coconut fiber: suitable for rainforest terrariums

Feeding

Alive feeding

  • Only under supervision in the feeding box, risk of injury.
  • Advantage: no loss of nutrients

Dead feeding

  • Fresh dead: no loss of nutrients, body temperature at the time of feeding
  • Frozen food: thaw evenly warm in a water bath or on heating body temperature 37-40 ºC
  • Long freezing: Loss of nutrients, deteriorated smell, taste, and texture, reduced risk of parasites
