Fish contains valuable fatty acids. But are these also healthy for four-legged friends? We looked into the question of whether dogs can eat sardines.
Sardines divide people’s spirits, but most dogs enjoy eating small fish, and that’s okay. With its high (and high-quality) protein content, Sardina pilchardus is a welcome change in the dog’s diet.
There is also good news when it comes to potential pollutants: sardines are among the marine fish with the lowest levels of mercury. Nevertheless, dogs should ideally only be fed the unsalted version in their juice (not in oil ). As with other foods, it is important to refrain from strong spices and/or flavor enhancers – sardine pizza is therefore not a good choice for four-legged friends when it comes to nutrition.
Healthy Macronutrients
If sardines are fed as part of a balanced diet, nothing stands in the way of this. On the contrary: the fish contain some nutrients that are otherwise often fed through dietary supplements.
In any case, the calcium, iron, and potassium it contains are good for your health – as are the omega-3 fatty acids EPA and DHA. On the one hand, these healthy fats have a positive effect on the skin and coat and, on the other hand, they help the body to reduce inflammation (especially in the case of allergies, arthritis, and autoimmune diseases).
