Chihuahua’s Eye is Watering – What to Do?

Occasionally, tear fluid accumulates in the eye, which can lead to small crusts in the corner of the eye. This dirt can usually be easily removed with a lint-free, damp cloth. Special cleaning pads from specialist shops help with stubborn stains (often on light-colored hair).

In some Chihuahuas, however, the eyes appear permanently moist, watery, and as if the liquid is collecting at the lower edge of the eye. This is often due to the Chihuahua’s big, round eyes. The further the eyes protrude, the more problematic. They offer a large attack surface for drafts, dust, dry room air, pollen, and other foreign bodies. They are also more prone to injury.

However, there may be other triggers:

  • allergies
  • infections
  • clogged tear ducts
  • the eye is irritated by eyelashes
  • conjunctivitis
  • dry room air (heating)
  • draft
  • strong wind while walking
  • foreign body
  • wind in the car
  • injuries

If the eye is still watering after 1-2 days or if your Chihuahua has a problem with it in general, please consult a veterinarian. This can prescribe ointments and drops or possibly even widen the tear duct.

If your Chihuahua is prone to watery eyes, you should not smoke at home and protect the dog from drafts. In winter, a humidifier helps with dry heating air. If a strong wind blows on the walk, special dog goggles can protect the eyes.
