Chihuahua Has Diarrhea – What to Do?

Dogs occasionally have loose stools or even diarrhea. Usually, the causes are rather harmless and the four-legged friend is fit again the next day. You can temporarily feed bland food and make sure you drink enough.

Nevertheless, you should always keep a close eye on the Chihuahua and, if in doubt, consult a veterinarian.

This is especially true when:

  • Your Chihuahua is still a puppy. Diarrhea can quickly turn into dangerous dehydration. Dog children with diarrhea should always be brought to the practice.
  • You discover blood in the stool.
  • The diarrhea is very watery and occurs frequently.
  • Your Chihuahua will show other symptoms such as vomiting, abdominal pain, or fever.
  • The dog does not want to eat and/or drink.
  • Signs of dehydration are noticed (cold legs, sunken eyes, raised skin folds only slowly becoming smooth again).

If diarrhea lasts longer than 1-2 days, a visit to the doctor is also advisable. If the Chihuahua has diarrhea, you can withdraw the food so that the gastrointestinal tract can calm down and then offer them bland food. This may consist of boiled rice with lean chicken breast. You can also add cottage cheese or mix in carrot or pumpkin puree. Please only start treatment with such home remedies if the Chihuahua is otherwise fit.

Causes of non-disease-related diarrhea are:

  • The dog ate something indigestible.
  • Your Chihuahua has eaten something from the garbage can or by the side of the road (trash).
  • Sudden food change.
  • Milk, butter, and cream can have a laxative effect.
  • Stress, excitement, fear.

Disease-related diarrhea, on the other hand, is caused by:

  • Parasites
  • Infectious diseases (viruses/bacteria)
  • Allergic reaction.
  • Gastrointestinal Diseases
  • Thyroid or pancreas problems

Important: Fresh drinking water should be available around the clock.
