Caution: What Can Be Dangerous for Cats in the Garden

If you want to make your garden safe for cats, you should know and eliminate possible dangers for your pet. We would like to list some of them below.

Cats like to be outside – but they are also exposed to more and above all different dangers than in the house. In order to minimize this at least in the garden, you should first check whether your house cat could fall into the water somewhere.

Rain Barrel, Garden Pond & Swimming Pools

Of course, the fact that many cats are afraid of water is no guarantee that they won’t get into the water, be it while playing or hunting. In principle, that’s not a problem, because cats can swim. But it is important that they get out of the water again.

If you have a swimming pool or a deep paddling pool in the garden, you should therefore put a board in it so that your pet can quickly escape shoring if the worst comes to the worst. A garden pond should be designed to be cat-friendly, should be nice and shallow towards the bank, and not contain any creepers that your cat can get tangled in.

You can also use a special, very fine-mesh grid under the water surface so that your pet always has ground under their feet. You should definitely cover rain barrels with a lid or grid, also for the sake of other animals.

Other Dangers for Cats

Toxic pesticides, insecticides, snail poison, and weed killers can be very dangerous for four-legged friends and should not be used to protect them. You should also be careful with fertilizer – under no circumstances should your pet drink water mixed with fertilizer. Poisonous plants are also not right for a cat-safe garden.

Hot grills, grill lighters, and leftover food should also not be accessible to cats. Also make sure that your pet always has enough shady places available, that there are no sharp or pointed objects that can pose a danger to them and that wet food residues are always disposed of before they spoil. Also, think about flea and tick repellent to make your pet’s time in the garden a pleasure.
