Can Dogs Eat Cottage Cheese?

Milk and milk products are very controversial in dog nutrition. The reason is simple. Most adult dogs cannot tolerate milk.

The result is usually diarrhea. This is because an adult dog cannot digest milk. It lacks an enzyme for it.

It is usually different from yogurt,  cheese, cottage cheese, and quark. These products are not only well-tolerated but popular with our four-legged friends.

How much cottage cheese for dogs?

By the way, yogurt and cottage cheese are also healthy for the dog and ideal for the diet kitchen.

It is the same with quark. There can also be a little more of that in dog nutrition.

Quark is low in lactose

Milk and milk products contain lactose, i.e. lactase. This lactose is broken down in the body by the digestive enzyme lactase.

When the puppy is weaned from its mother’s milk, the body slowly begins to stop producing lactase. If the animal no longer receives milk or milk products at all, the dog’s body stops producing lactase completely.

Therefore, adult dogs can no longer break down lactase. You are lactose intolerant.

However, if you keep feeding your dog dairy products, the body will continue to produce lactase and digestion will continue.

However, a dog should not drink pure milk.

Dairy products such as quark, yogurt, cheese, and cottage cheese contain very little lactose. Therefore, these dairy products are usually well-tolerated even by lactose-intolerant dogs.

Recipes: cottage cheese and linseed oil for dogs

Quark is rich in proteins, it contains a lot of calcium and hardly any lactose. Quark is one of the few foods that contain all the necessary amino acids.

Quark is therefore an excellent addition to the food bowl for dogs. Add small amounts of quark to the feed again and again.

Ideally, mix the white cheese with linseed oil. Then it can be absorbed even better by the dog’s body.

Quark as a light diet for diarrhea

Quark is particularly important in the dog’s diet.

A dog that is sick or convalescent is usually not very hungry or should only eat bland food.

Boiled potatoes or rice with boiled carrots, a little quark, and linseed oil form the optimal basis for healthy light food.

Mix a spoonful of quark with some honey. The mixture provides your dog with vitamins and gives him strength after a long illness.

Five delicious quark recipes for dogs are:

  1. Balls of rice and quark
  2. Cottage cheese biscuits
  3. Banana curd
  4. Cottage cheese with honey
  5. Oatmeal with cottage cheese

Delicious balls of rice and quark

Every dog likes these quark balls. You need the following ingredients for the balls:

  • 150 g cottage cheese
  • 4 tablespoons linseed oil
  • 1 egg yolk
  • 100 grams of rice

Preparation: Pre-cook the rice in a saucepan with two cups of water for five to eight minutes. Let the rice cool down a bit. Then put the rice in a bowl with the other ingredients. Mix the mixture with a hand mixer on the lowest setting for one to two minutes.

The next step is to form small balls out of the mass. Place the balls on a baking sheet and put them in the oven preheated to 200 degrees.

Bake the quark balls for about 20 minutes until they have turned golden. Leave to cool and then serve to the dog.

If you like, you can alternatively add some cheese, bacon, or ham. For our dogs Max and Peggy, these balls are real treats that they can never get enough of.

Cottage cheese biscuits

These biscuits should inspire every dog. You need the following ingredients:

  • 150 grams of wheat flour
  • 150 g wholemeal flour
  • 150 g cottage cheese
  • 3 tbsp linseed oil
  • 6 tbsp milk
  • 2 tsp chopped parsley
  • 4 tbsp chicken broth (powdered)
  • 1 pinch of salt
  • 2 teaspoons wheat germ

Preparation:
First, put the chicken broth in a saucepan and bring it to a boil for three to four minutes. Let the chicken broth cool down a bit.

Now mix the broth with the oil and milk. Add the flour, the cottage cheese, the chopped parsley, and the salt one after the other. Mix everything well until you get a soft dough.

Roll out the dough. You can cut out small cookies or form rolls, which you then roll in the wheat germ.

Place the biscuits on a baking sheet and flatten them slightly. Place the tray in an oven preheated to 200 degrees. Bake the cookies for about 30 minutes until they are light brown.

Before serving, you should let the cookies sit for a few hours. By the way: These biscuits not only taste delicious but are also very suitable for cleaning your teeth. We give our dogs one of these cookies two to three times a week.

Banana curd

We have had very good experiences with our dog Cain, a golden retriever, with this banana quark. There is hardly a dish that he throws himself into more than this quark. You need the following ingredients:

  • 150 g cottage cheese
  • 2 bananas
  • 2 tbsp linseed oil

Preparation: Peel the bananas. Cut the bananas into small pieces. In the next step, put the pieces in a blender and puree the bananas to a soft pulp.

Put the banana puree in a bowl. Mix the whole thing with the quark, the milk, and the linseed oil. Leave the quark in the fridge for at least two hours. You can then serve the dish to your loved one.

Cottage cheese with honey

A very simple dish is cottage cheese with honey. You can prepare this in just a few simple steps. My Cocker Spaniel Mona licks her paws after this dish.

You need the following ingredients for quark with honey:

  • 150 g low-fat quark
  • 2 tbsp linseed oil
  • 2 tbsp honey

Preparation: Take a large bowl and put the quark in it. Add the linseed oil and honey one after the other.

Blend the mixture with a hand mixer. Start at the lowest level and slowly shift up. Stir the whole thing until you get an evenly soft mass.

In the final step, place the bowl in the fridge for at least two hours. Then you can treat your dog to sweet treats with this delicious quark dish.

Oatmeal with cottage cheese

Oatmeal with quark is a dish that goes down very well with many dogs. This could also quickly become a favorite dish for your dog. For my dog Doug, I always form small balls from the ingredients, which I briefly bake in the oven.

For oatmeal with cottage cheese you need the following ingredients:

  • 150 g cottage cheese
  • 5 tablespoons linseed oil
  • 1 egg yolk
  • 1 tsp honey
  • 200 grams of rolled oats

Preparation: You need a large bowl in which you first put the quark and milk. At the lowest level, start mixing the ingredients with a hand mixer.

Gradually add the oil, then the egg yolk, honey, and finally, ly the rolled oats. Mix it all until you get an evenly soft mass.

Then form small balls from the dough and place them on a baking sheet. In the last step, the sheet is pushed into an oven preheated to 200 degrees. Bake the balls for around 20 minutes. When they turn a golden brown color, they’re just the right consistency.

Before serving, you should let the balls cool for a few minutes. As an alternative to oatmeal, you can also use special dog flakes.

This is how curd is made

Cottage cheese is made from milk. For this purpose, skimmed milk is mixed with lactic acid bacteria or rennet enzymes.

The milk coagulates and separates into solid and liquid components. The liquid whey is separated from the solid components by draining or centrifuging.

Depending on the fat level, the cream is added to the resulting quark. Incidentally, in Bavaria and Austria, Quark is called Toppen.

Cool curd wraps

However, quark is not only ideal for being eaten. It can also be a good natural remedy for injuries.

A cooling quark pad can help with joint pain, inflammation, bruises, or sprains. Quark pads inhibit inflammation, have a pain-relieving and cooling effect, and reduce swelling.

  • To do this, take a quark and spread it about half a centimeter high on a cloth.
  • Fold this and place it on the affected areas until the curd dries.

Never put the quark directly on the fur. It becomes difficult to remove once it has dried.

Of course, getting the envelope to work before the dog starts eating it is a challenge. But on the other hand, the active substance in this case does not harm.
