Can a Chihuahua Climb Stairs?

Yes, they can! Fully grown Chihuahuas are quite capable of walking up and down steps themselves. However, owners have been discussing for ages whether this is really useful and necessary or whether it is more harmful to the four-legged friend.

In general, it is advised not to let the dog run up any stairs in the first year of life and to carry it better. Fortunately, as the owner of a Chihuahua, this is usually not a problem, since the four-legged friend is compact in size and light in weight.

Chihuahuas sometimes suffer from PL. Climbing stairs can promote patellar luxation.

Running or jumping down is more harmful than going up the stairs. Therefore, avoid it as much as possible after the first year of life.

The adult Chi is just 15-23 cm tall. A normal step height is between 18 and 20 cm. It takes a lot of effort to climb that height.

Beware of steep, slippery, and open stairs. There is a risk of injury here.

Puppies should always be carried! While it certainly doesn’t matter if your adult Chihuahua darts up a few steps occasionally, it shouldn’t become the norm.
