Bearded Dragons: Interesting Facts about Keeping, Food, Winter Rest, and More

Bearded dragons are among the most popular terrarium residents. You can find out here why they are so fascinating and what a species-appropriate attitude looks like.

The No. 1 Among the Lizards

The cute scallop reptiles are number 1 among lizards kept in Germany. The 60 centimeters long striped-headed bearded dragon (Pogona vitticeps) and the half-sized dwarf bearded dragon (Pogona henry lawson) are particularly popular. The keeping conditions of the two diurnal, plant-based omnivores, which can live up to 15 years, hardly differ.

Keeping of Bearded Dragons

In nature they only meet to mate, so you can keep bearded dragons individually. Well-structured, large terrariums can also be kept in harems (one male with two to three females) or groups of pure females. Bearded dragons come in many colors and breeds. However, refrain from the scaly Silkbacks, which are classified as torture breeding. The trusting reptiles are not cuddly toys and children should only come into contact with them under supervision. Basically, bearded dragons belong in the terrarium. Note that it is essential that they hibernate for eight to twelve weeks.

Establishment of a Terrarium for Bearded Dragons

One or two adult animals need a terrarium of at least 200 x 90 x 90 centimeters (dwarf bearded dragon: 120 x 80 x 80). Set up temperature zones in the terrarium: the warmest is between 40 to 50 degrees Celsius, the coolest should be room temperature. At night the temperature is lowered to 20 degrees. UVA and UVB radiation are essential for bearded dragons. Metal halide lamps ensure (observe the safety distance!) That there is a sufficient supply of UV light and a high level of brightness. If necessary, a heat lamp can also be installed in order to achieve the necessary peak temperatures.

Mixed-light lamps consume more electricity and are less bright, but in most cases combine heat and UV output. Bright terrarium LEDs should be used for basic lighting. Avoid red light and ceramic emitters: Reptiles can only combine heat with visible light. The perfect flooring is terrarium sand, which you sprinkle in 20 centimeters deep and always keep a little moist for digging in the depths. What else belongs in the terrarium: branches, roots, stones, a water bowl, a food bowl, a hygro-, and a thermometer.

Proper Hygiene for Bearded Dragons

You should submit a fecal sample to a veterinarian who knows about reptiles every year to rule out parasite infestation. Hygiene is important: reptiles can transmit salmonella. Clean the terrarium regularly, remove poop and leftover food daily, and wash your hands after contacting your scaly friend.

The Right Food for Bearded Dragons

Young animals need a lot of protein and are fed 90 percent animal and 10 percent plant-based. In the case of adult animals, the ratio shifts to 80 percent vegan food. The bearded dragon vegetable kitchen includes clover, pansy, ground elder, dandelion, wild herbs, romaine lettuce. Live insects such as crickets, crickets, small grasshoppers, and cockroaches are suitable as animal feed. Adult animals fast two days a week. Important: Be sure to add mineral and vitamin powder to the feed.
